Muriel Gray

Obituary of Muriel Grace Gray

Gray, Muriel Grace:  87 , Halifax, formally of Sambro , N.S.      It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful mother, Muriel, with her family by her side. Born October 9th, 1930, in Halifax, she was daughter of the late Hildred and Daisy (Nagle) Purcell. Muriel loved her home and her yard in Sambro. Nasturtiums were planted throughout her yard every summer. She enjoyed knitting and would make Phentex slippers as gifts for the girls in the family and some of the boys too. She was an avid Elvis fan and collected his memorabilia. She loved to make quilts and dolls, having started on her old Singer treadle machine until she got an electric one, years later. She made bread almost every day and often had a big pot of corned beef and cabbage or something else on the stove for whomever dropped by. Everyone was welcome in Muriel's home. Unfortunately, 22 years ago, Muriel had a stroke and this took her from her beloved home in Sambro to Melville Lodge, Spryfield. For many years her daughters Ellie and Wanda brought her home to her house in Sambro for four days every week until her health made this too difficult. Ellie still kept an eye on her Mom, visiting every day at Melville. Muriel had the best sense of humour, which endeared her to everyone she met. The staff at Melville would stop by for a sweet and to enjoy her quick wit. Even when she was so sick near the end, she would pop out with something that would make you laugh.  The family would like to thank the staff at Melville Lodge for the many years of loving care they have shown their Mom.  She is survived by her sons, Danny (Patsy), Sambro, Patrick (Marjorie), Williamswood, Gary (Janet, or as Muriel called her, "Pam"), Spryfield and Kevin (Christine), Herring Cove, her daughters, Wanda (Barry) DeBaie, Little Harbour and Ellie, Sambro. grandchildren, Lesley, April, Angela, Chad, Mark, Melissa, Donna, Kaitlyn, Tyler and Michael,  great-grandchildren, Aaron, Taylor, Brandon, Michael, Kristopher, David-Lee, Mya, Quentin, as well as one on the way, and many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Lloyd, granddaughter, Keary-Lee, brothers, Doug, Frank and Kenneth and sisters, Mary Purcell and Winnie Micheau.

Cremation has taken place. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 5th, 2018 at 2:00 PM in St. James United Church, Sambro. Interment will take place in St. James United Church Cemetery.
