Obituary of Raymond Edward R. Currie

Age 63 of Hammonds Plains, passed away in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII on June 16, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He was a son of the late Raymond Joseph Currie and Joan (MacDonald) Currie. He was born June 9, 1953. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret (Warner) of 31 years; sons, Raymond Alan and Matthew Stuart; sisters, Anna Fraughton, Joanne (Donnie) MacLean, Mary Lou (Steve) Gray, Susan James; brothers in-law, Staff Sgt. Alan (Kimberley) Warner, and Ray (Barbara) Warner; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Ray was predeceased by a brother in infancy, Richard William; brothers in-law, Jimmy Fraughton (Anna) and Steve Warner (Jeannine); parents in-law, Elmer and Dorothy Warner. Ray had a close and special relationship with Dot. He was affectionately known by the BRCC as "Bear" and his sons’ close friends and coworkers as "Big Ray", and a particular person he met along his daily delivery route who proclaimed Ray was "the hardest working man in Halifax". He loved his family deeply and his friends unconditionally. Margaret was the love of his life and he hers. His warm smile, infectious laugh and wonderful sense of humor would light up a room and set the tone for an unforgettable encounter. Ray found a rewarding job with Monarch Brokers in the last six years and forged close friendships with Mike Clarke and staff who treated Ray like gold. He also worked at various businesses in Halifax including the Halifax Herald Ltd. Ray was a guy’s guy and Hockey was one of his favorite pastimes spurred on by his hockey hero, "# 9 Gordie Howe". He played Halifax Minor Hockey, gentlemen’s "beer leagues" ending his hockey career with the Tantallon Oldtimers League. Ray was an avid paddler enjoying four decades of adventures and misadventures of the Boney River Canoe Club with his closest lifelong friends, paddling the waterways of Nova Scotia and beyond. He looked forward to the annual week-long wilderness canoe trips and weekends at the hunting camp. Ray will be sadly missed by his family and immense network of friends! Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 22 from 6-8 PM in St. Theresa’s Church Hall, North Street. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 23 at 11 AM in St. Theresa’s Church. No flowers by request. Donations to a charity of your choice. Thanks to the EHS Paramedics, Hammonds Plains Fire Department and the Halifax Infirmary QEII CCU who never gave up on Ray.
