Obituary of William Duff Morrison

It is with deep sadness our family announces the passing on March 25, 2017 of William Duff Morrison, father, grandfather and great grandfather, at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Hospital in his 99th year. Duff was born on January 11, 1919 in New Waterford, N.S. to Dr. John Charles and Mary T. (Duff) Morrison. After completing his education at Acadia University, he joined the Bank of Nova Scotia. Shortly after doing so, he volunteered for war duty and joined the Royal Canadian Navy, serving on the HMCS New Waterford in the North Atlantic, North Sea and English Channel. For his service during World War II he received the War Medal 1939 - 1945, the Canadian Overseas Volunteer Medal, the France Germany Star and the 1939 - 1945 Star. After the war, he returned to the Bank. He also married the love of his life, Mary Evelyn Sponagle in 1947. Duff remained with the bank in many capacities, retiring in January 1979 as the manager of the Amherst, Nova Scotia branch. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer. He enjoyed swimming and most of all, trailering throughout the Maritimes and Canada. He is survived by his children Robert W.D. Morrison (Beth), Timberlea; Bruce R. Morrison (Paul Shepherd), Halifax; Megan E. Morrison-Roache (David), Halifax; Scott A. Morrison (Annette Lyth), Brentwood Bay, B.C.; grandchildren, Kathryn Riley (Robert), Karyn Morrison, Jessica Roache and Allyson Roache; great grandchildren, Seth W.D. Morrison and Samuel O. Riley. Duff was pre-deceased by his parents and his wife Evelyn, brothers, Frederick Charles Morrison and Neil Alistair Morrison. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to at the J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd, 149 Herring Cove Rd. Spryfield, N.S. where a private family service will be held. Interment will be at Heatherdale Memorial Gardens, Sylvester, Pictou County at a later date. No flowers by request. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Duff’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the United Church Home for Senior Citizens Foundation, Sackville New Brunswick. Duff’s family wish to express their sincere gratitude to the health care staff of 6 West Jubilee at Camp Hill for all the care and kindness extended to our father during his stay. You are all truly amazing people.
