Obituary of Gary Kenneth Castle
CASTLE, Gary Kenneth – 76, Halifax, NS.
The family of Gary Kenneth Castle are saddened to announce his passing on March 12, 2025, in St. Vincent’s Nursing Home. Gary died peacefully surrounded by family.
Born in Carrolls Corner in 1948, Gary was the son of the late Kenneth and Laura Castle. He will be dearly missed by his wife and best friend of 55 years, Cheryl Arleen Castle (Johnson); his son, Mark Castle (Jessica), Halifax; daughter, Kelly Castle MacKaracher (Reg), Timberlea; his grandson, Ewan; and step-grandson, MacLean. He will also be dearly missed by his brother, Dale Castle, Middle Musquodoboit and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Gary was a professional photographer and artist since 1968. Aftergraduating with a diploma in Photographic Theory, he began his career at Dalhousie University as a bio-medical photographer at the Biology/Oceanography department, School of Dentistry and Life Sciences AV Center. In 1981 he left Dalhousie to open his own custom photo-service lab. He had numerous one-man shows of his photographic images, and his photos have been published extensively in journals and books. His painting/photo collage works have been included in many group exhibits. Some works are in the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Art Bank of Nova Scotia, the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, as well as many private collections.
Gary and his wife, Cheryl, created a home filled with love, laughter, and endless support. He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially loved his adventures with his grandson, Ewan. He had a love of nature and could usually be found walking for hours at either Point Pleasant Park or Sir Sanford Fleming Park in Halifax, almost always with his camera in hand. Gary also loved music and played drums on and off over the years. He was playing right up until his illness. Gary had the warmest smile and had a way of making everyone feel welcome and at ease. He will be truly missed by all of his friends and family.
At Gary’s request, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place and a burial will take place, at a later date, in Gays River, NS.
The family would like to express our sincere thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Nova Scotia Cancer Centre and the ninth floor of the Victoria General Hospital. Although his stay was brief, we would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to St. Vincent’s Nursing Home; in particular the third-floor nurses and staff. It brought Gary great comfort in the end to be in the same home as his wife and we sincerely appreciate the care and kindness you provided. Also, a special thank you to Gary’s long-time friend, Jim Clark. We are grateful for the companionship and support provided throughout his illness.
In lieu of flowers, a donation would be appreciated to Brain Cancer Canada, Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, or a charity of your choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home.
“Thank you, Dad. You created a lifetime of beautiful memories which we hold so dear. We couldn’t have asked for a better father, mentor, and friend. We love and miss you so much”.
