Obituary of Carl McNamara

Carl McNamara

June 14, 1945 – July 24, 2025

It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Carl McNamara on July 24, 2025, at the VG Hospital in Halifax, NS.

Born on June 14, 1945, in Halifax, Carl was the beloved son of the late Malinda and Leonard McNamara.

Carl was a loving husband to the love of his life, Diane, for 56 wonderful years. “Di and Bud” shared a deep and enduring bond, and are now reunited once again.

He was a proud and devoted father to his son, Chris, and daughter, Shelley. Carl was affectionately known as “Pats” to his cherished granddaughter, Madison — a title he wore with pride and love.

Carl began his lifelong career in the flooring industry at the young age of 15, working alongside his father. His dedication and work ethic eventually led him to run his own successful flooring business for over 50 years. Carl also served as President of Maria’s Housing Cooperative, where he contributed to the betterment of his community.

After retiring, Carl devoted himself to helping Diane with their home daycare. While Diane was fondly known as the “President,” Carl embraced his role as “Vice President.” Together, they shaped the lives of hundreds of children and became pillars in the Cowie Hill community, where they made their home for 44 happy years.

His passions included antique cars, car shows, all things hockey, Johnny Cash and the Halifax Mooseheads. He was a season ticket holder and devoted fan since day one.

Carl is survived by his loving siblings:

Alice Goodrich (late Doug), Paula Chisholm (Tom), Gertrude Sole (late Fred), Linda Deveau (Bob), Rod (late Betty), Eileen McNamara (late Carl), Gerald (Cathy), Debbie McNamara (Gary), Gale Cyr (Don), Dale (Jo-Ann), and Wayne (Donna).

He is also remembered fondly by his in-laws Alan (Helen) Yeadon and Brenda (Bob) Fraser, and many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.

Carl was predeceased by his brothers William (late Heather and late Elaine), and Carl in infancy.

Carl will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to family, his kindness, infectious smile and the countless lives he touched through his work and community involvement.

Arrangements and cremation have been entrusted to J. Albert Walker Funeral Home Halifax. In keeping with Carl’s wishes there will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 9th 1:00pm at Sheffield Baptist Church, 80 Lincoln Cross Dr. Halifax. There will be a reception at the church following the funeral service.
