When I arrived at Dal in 1975, I was assigned an office in the basement with a door leading to a room next door that was occupied by a gentleman with a warm and genuine smile. JAP soon became a lifelong friend. Both of us were hired on short-term contracts with no guarantees for the future. I don’t recall exactly when we were elevated to the upper floors, but we were soon given tenure-track appointments and went on to have great careers with excellent students and colleagues. One dictionary definition of noble is “having or showing fine personal qualities or high moral principles and ideals”. I can’t think of a better way to describe my friend Jim. Fittingly, Jim and Alex were longtime residents of Noble Court, the venue of so many wonderful dinners.

To say that Professor Jim Pincock had a tremendous impact on our lives would be an understatement. I started graduate school at Dalhousie University the fall of 1985 with Jim as my PhD supervisor. Jim was a calm, brilliant, energetic professor and I very quickly learned how impressive he was as a teacher and mentor. We had numerous discussions around the photochemical research program we embarked on. Jim was very insightful throughout the research program and his lab was an absolute joy to work in. He brought in a number of graduate students, summer students and post-doctoral fellows from around the world and Jim ensured that the lab was a very collegial place to work.
I met my wife, Kim McManus, there when she worked as a summer student. Later Jim was a member of her PhD committee and a great mentor to her as well. The picture is of Kim and Jim after she received her PhD degree. Both of us maintained a friendship with Jim, Alex, Kathy and Christine over the years. In fact, Kathy and Christine were flower girls at our wedding.
Jim was a kind, humble, very easy going and engaging person that you wanted to talk to and be around. Kim's and my lives have been so enriched with him being such a big part of it.
To the best chemistry professor ever...
Our deepest condolence to Alex, Kathy, Christine and family.

Dear Alex and Family,
We were sorry to hear the news about Jim's passing. He was a great colleague in so many ways -- always friendly and helpful. He made a significant mark as an educator and researcher, and also as a person.
Your full obituary was so interesting and informative, and filled in many aspects of Jim's early life. Thanks so much for writing that record. (We hope you will send the link to the Chemical Institute of Canada to post on their memorial page -- details at https://www.cheminst.ca/news/in-memoriam/).
Jim's legacy is his wonderful family and also the many, many developing chemists he influenced in such positive ways.
May his memory be a blessing,
Rob and Mary Anne White

My condolences to the entire Pincock clan. Dr Pincock (as I will always refer to him, despite permission to call him Jim) had a strong, positive influence on my formative years as a chemist. I have fond memories of my time in his group, first as an Honours student, and then a Masters. May you be comforted by your memories of his presence.

Sending our condolences to Alex and family. He was a top notch professor and an outstanding Ph.D. supervisor and mentor to Paula. He went above and beyond to provide excellent learning opportunities. He was also a wonderful person. A calm and patient man when dealing with a lab of spirited young women! We had the pleasure of Jim giving a lovely speech at our wedding 30 years ago.
Thanks for everything Jim, RIP.

To the Family of Dr. Jim Pincock,
My many wonderful memories of Dr. Pincock were as a student in his Organic chemistry class, ‘76-‘77.
His skill explaining the concepts of the subject matter was on display during every lecture. He was a sincere
human being who always had time to assist those students who may have struggled at times.
It was my great pleasure to have been a student in his class.
May you RIP Dr. Pincock,
Robert A Lewington, retired

It is with a heavy heart that Helene and I send deepest condolences to Alex and family. It was an honour for me to have shared 25 years with Jim as my colleague at Dalhousie and to have worked with Alex on Concepts in Chemistry. Jim was an outstanding role model of a teacher and mentor, which I tried to emulate. He was an excellent squash player and it was a highlight of my week if I could win a match against him. I enjoyed every time I chatted with him and his wisdom was a tremendous guide for me and for the Department when he was Chair in 2005 and when I followed him as Chair in 2008. Most importantly, Jim and Alex were outstanding hosts at their house and Jim was an excellent chef. Thank you Jim.

Alex and family, I'm sorry for your loss. Dr. P played a huge role in my life as my first undergrad research mentor in 2003, and I'll always remember with fondness his kindness and patience towards me as an undergrad who had very little idea what I was doing. Our talks about gardening and orchids were fun too. As a chemist, I use concepts he taught me every day. I was also lucky to know him as Jim, when I was a junior colleague of his 12 years later on. Again, his kindness in helping me recruit some early students, and advice he gave helped me a lot. He was an amazing and admirable teacher and scholar and an even more amazing person.
