Obituary of Joan Margaret Charlton

It is with sadness and loss that we announce the passing of Joan Margaret Charlton who passed away on December 16, 2025, at Parkstone Enhanced Care in Halifax at the age of 90. Born in Portuguese Cove, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Katherine (Corbett) Purcell.

Joan worked in administration for T. C. Gorman Construction Ltd. before her marriage. She later worked for Simpsons-Sears (later Sears) in human resources for over 25 years until she retired. She was a devout member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, member of the CWL (Catholic Women’s League) and a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed spending time with family, camping, gardening, and picking berries with Gordie. She became an avid golfer in her later years, and she and Gordie travelled the province to play as many courses as possible. For many years, they loved to spend several months each winter in Florida.

She will be remembered by her loving husband of 69 years, Gordie; sons, Robert (Karen) and Michael (Laura); grandchildren, Ben (Sarah) and Katelyn (Chad); great-grandchildren, Meghan, Hayden, Liam, Eli, and Layla; great-great-grandson, Kendrick; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sister Mary and brother-in-law Gerald Fraser.

Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, Halifax. Funeral Mass and burial are tentatively planned for June 10, 2026. Donations in Joan's memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. The family would like to thank the staff at Parkstone Enhanced Care for their care and compassion.
