Obituary of Viola Louise Aylward
It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our mother, Viola, of Lower Sackville, on Saturday, December 20 surrounded by the love of her family. She was predeceased by her parents, Katherine and Elmore; thirteen siblings; her husbands, Bill Verney and George Aylward; her beloved son, Andy Verney; and most recently her daughter-in-law, Dawn Verney.
Viola is survived by her cherished children Greg Verney, Lisa Verney (Lisa White), and Michelle Verney; her older sister, Winnie Reid; daughter-in-law Janice Verney; and her grandchildren Michael, Karen, Nathan, Devon, BJ, Matthew, Jade, and Jayla, along with thirteen great-grandchildren. She is also lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews, and dear friends Sue and Keith McLearn. Viola recently said goodbye to her beloved dog, Casey, who spent more than 16 devoted years by her side.
Viola lived a full and meaningful life, grounded in her deep love for family, friendship, and community. She spent her early years in Stewiacke and Londonderry. In the mid-1980s, she settled in Wellington, where she became an active and valued member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Wellington Firehall. Until this past month, Viola lived independently in her home in Lower Sackville — made possible through the kindness and support of many. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped along the way, especially nephew Gordie Horne these past few months. Elder Dog Canada played an especially important role in supporting Viola's independence. Volunteers Stephen, Jacqueline, and Victoria walked Casey and that meant so much to her. The family also extends sincere thanks to Dr. Diaz of Lower Sackville for years of compassionate care, the VON and Home Care teams for their weekly support, and the vascular team in Unit 7.2 at the QE2 Health Sciences Centre for their care and kindness during Viola's final days.
Cremation has taken place. Per Viola's wishes, there will be no funeral, however the family will host a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of cards and flowers, donations may be made to Elder Dog Canada in memory of Viola and Casey.
