Obituary of Gerald Edward Rogers

Gerald Edward Rogers, 87, of Portuguese Cove, NS, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on January 1, 2026 at the QEII, New Halifax Infirmary, Halifax, NS.  Born in Halifax, NS, he was the only son of the late Beryl (Purcell).

Gerald grew up in Portuguese Cove with his mother and grandfather.  He went to Halifax Vocational School, for pipe fitting and also followed his uncle's footsteps and became a firefighter, where he worked for the Halifax Fire Dept, for over 30 years.  His last few years were spent with his loving daughter, Donna, in her home in White’s Lake.

Gerald was always up for an adventure.  He enjoyed many vacations with his wife and granddaughters, whether they went strawberry picking in the Valley, or week long trips to Bangor.  He spent many years with CN Via bowling and going on tournaments.  Also meeting up with friends each morning at A&W for breakfast.

Gerald is survived by his only beloved daughter, Donna Conway.  “Old Gump” will be sadly missed by his treasured granddaughters, Alicia MacDonald (David) and Michelle Ubsdell (David), his cherished great-grandchildren, Pat (Maddy), Candace, Theo and James, and a precious great-great-granddaughter, Layne.   He is also survived by his wife’s foster brothers, Vernon Kelly (Bev) and Jimmy Kelly (Pat), as well as his many friends and “adopted” grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Margaret Marie (Day), his mother, Beryl, and his special son-in-law, David Conway.

Gerald’s family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses at the hospital, especially those who cared for him during his five days in hospital. As well as VON, for all of their home visits. 

Cremation has taken place under the care of J.A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. A celebration of Gerald's life will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 2-4pm at 8 Stoney Beach Road, Whites Lake, NS (Donna's home).
