Obituary of Brian David Sweet

Brian David Sweet

August 30, 1943 – January 14, 2026

Brian David Sweet, age 82, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026, at the QE II, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Halifax on August 30, 1943, Brian was the beloved son of the late Margaret and Reid Sweet. He grew up in Halifax and went on to attend Saint Mary’s University. Brian dedicated 27 years of service to the Department of Justice in Halifax, where he worked as a Probation Officer, a role he carried out with integrity, compassion, and professionalism. Always giving back to his community, Brian volunteered for many years at the Hubbards Recreation Centre and was a devoted blood donor for more than twenty years, quietly helping countless lives.

Brian lived life fully and joyfully. An avid traveler, he loved exploring both locally and abroad with his beloved wife, Olette, documenting their many adventures through photography. Taking photos was Brian’s greatest passion; no family gathering or occasion was complete without his camera close at hand. He also enjoyed boating and could often be found on the water, proudly known as “Captain Sweet Dreams.” Summer evenings spent chatting with friends at the Hubbards Waterfront—fondly referred to as the “Liars Table”—were among his most cherished pastimes.

Brian was deeply loved by many. He had a natural warmth and magnetism, drawing people to him with ease. Easygoing, personable, and always ready for a conversation, Brian had a youthful spirit and an ability to connect with people of all ages. His positive outlook and genuine kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Brian will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Remedios “Olette” Sweet; his sons, Alan (Anika), Jamie (Julie), and Andy (Val); and his cherished grandchildren, Cassie, Maya, Ryder, and Marley. He is also fondly remembered by his nephews and nieces in the Philippines, whom he lovingly referred to as “the Munchkins.” Brian was predeceased by his sister, Rosemary (Paul) Cumming.

Brian’s family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Graham B., Eric D., Bernie H., and Dan D. for their overwhelming support and care over the past years and during Brian’s final days. They also extend sincere thanks to the doctors, family physicians, nurses, and cleaning and  maintenance staff at the QE II Health Sciences Centre for their compassion, dedication, and exceptional care throughout Brian’s journey.

Brian’s wish for his family and friends is to remember him as he was—through the happy times, shared laughter, and the many memories made together.

Donations in Brian’s memory may be made to the QE II Foundation.
