Obituary of Veronica Mary Parsons
The family of Mary "Veronica" Parsons (née Sampson) of Spryfield are saddened to announce her passing on 11 Feb 2026 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Born 16 March 1939 in River Bourgeois, Cape Breton, Veronica was just one month short of her 87th birthday. Veronica did a short stint in the Air Force at Borden, Ont., and when she returned home in 1958, mom moved to Halifax with her best friend/cousin, Patsy, where they shared a room and worked together at Canadian Linen Supply. Patsy's then boyfriend (future husband), Albert Morris, introduced Mom to his friend Stewart "Sonny" Parsons, who Mom claimed she "couldn't stand" when she first met him because he was "such a show off!" Apparently, he won her over because the next year they were married and moved to Sussex St in Spryfield, and the following year their family began. They were married for 63 years until Dad's death in 2022.
When the kids were growing up, Veronica was a stay at home Mom, making sure her kids and Sonny were looked after. When her children were older, Veronica joined the workforce at Sears on Mumford Road and was there for several years until Zeller's, Spryfield, opened its doors. Being close to home, Mom took a job there in the fabric department, which she truly enjoyed, exercising her skills and expertise in fabric and yarn and the tools needed to create handmade items, sharing her knowledge with shoppers and helping whomever she could, from the day that the store opened until she retired many years later.
Veronica was a Master of everything she did, Sewing, Knitting, Crocheting, Oil Painting (she loved sharing her creations with the ones she loved), Quilting, Gardening, you name it, she made sure it was done right and well! She was a fantastic Bowler and was on at least 2 leagues each season; everyone wanted her on their team as she always took the trophy for high single, double and triple. In the late 70's and early 80's, she and Dad would take spring vacations to St Pete's, Florida, with Patsy and Albert. They had many great times together on their trips and told many stories of fun and laughter when they returned home. Once they decided not to travel South anymore, they purchased a travel trailer and settled in a spot at Beechbrook Campground in Ardoise for almost 40 years, where they enjoyed spending their summer weekends.
Veronica loved her Children, Kim, Kevin (Barb) and Don (Debbie); grandchildren, Christopher, Jordan, Lara, Jennifer, Melissa, Caitlin and Sidney; and great-grandchildren, Dorian, Chase, Summer, Greer, Blaire, and Elianna.
Veronica is survived by her children and their families mentioned above; sisters,Theresa Kyte - River Bourgeois, Anna MacDonald - West Bay Rd, Joyce Roy - Dartmouth; sister-in-law, Diane Harris - Halifax; brother-in-law Douglas Parsons - Fergusons Cove; sister- in-law Betty-Lou (Bill) Petite - Darlings Island NB; brother In-law Carl White (Halifax); God Daughters, Linda Armstrong née Morris and Lydia Burke née Kyte; and many nephews and nieces. Our family would like to thank the Staff at Melville Lodge for the exceptional, loving care given to Mom for the last 9 years. There just isn't enough that can be said to express our gratitude.
Cremation has taken place. As per Mom's wishes, there will be a funeral and internment at St. John the Baptist Church in River Bourgeois at a later date.
