Obituary of Charles Eric Melanson

Charles Eric Melanson passed away on February 20, 2026, at the Halifax Infirmary at the age of 91. Born in the North End of Halifax on August 25, 1934, he was the fifth child of seven of Wilfred Melanson (1898–1995) and Kathleen Melanson (née Murphy; 1901–1988). He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1954 and served until 1959. Afterwards, he began working as the General Foreman at the Halifax Grain Elevator, near Point Pleasant Park. On August 22, 1964, he married Louise Downie (1935–2025) of Low Point, Nova Scotia, and would have two sons, Peter and John. He would go on to have two grandchildren, Sam and Paul, through his son, John. He is remembered for his friendly demeanour, his calmness, his unflappability, and his passion for watching Last of the Summer Wine with his family. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilfred and Kathleen, siblings Lawrence (1924–2004), Doris (1925–2015), John (1928–2014), Wilfred (1931–1932), and Mary (1941–2014), and his beloved wife, Louise, who passed away in April 2025. His is survived by his sister, Margaret, sons Peter and John (Smita Halder), and grandsons Sam and Paul. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at 11 AM from St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, 6032 Normandy Drive, Halifax, NS.
