Obituary of Betty Jean Hughes

HUGHES, Betty Jean (Cromar) — Age 93, of Halifax, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026, with her family at her side. Born May 4, 1932, Betty taught kindergarten before devoting herself to raising her children and later working with her husband in the business they owned. A lifelong volunteer, she gave generously of her time through UNICEF, the YWCA and the UCW at Parkhill United Church. She loved to travel with her husband, friends and family. She was predeceased by her husband Sidney, brother, Irvine “Mike” Cromar, sister, Lenore Young, and brother, Stuart Cromar.

She is survived by her children, Carolyn (Darrell Pardy), James (Elizabeth), Peter (Viki), and John (Krista); grandchildren, Christopher, Stephen, Samantha, Megan, James, Liam, Sarah, and Grace; and great-grandchildren, Luca, Lorenzo, and Sonia.

A memorial reception will be held between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, at J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Road.
