Obituary of Mervin Ralph Morash

It is with great sadness that the family of Mervin “Moe” Morash announces his passing on March 19, 2026. He leaves behind a lifetime of service, dedication, and cherished memories.

Born and raised in Indian Harbour, Nova Scotia, Moe enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in September 1961. He completed his basic training at the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps in Borden, Ontario, and began a distinguished military career that would span 32 years. He was first posted to CFB Gagetown in 1962 and served overseas in Iserlohn, Germany, for three and a half years before returning to CFB Gagetown in 1968.

From 1968 to 1971, Moe was stationed in Shearwater before returning to Germany, where he was posted to Lahr in the Black Forest. He later transitioned to CRFS Cornwallis, where he trained recruits until 1977. Following that, Moe remustered to the RCAF and joined CFB Greenwood as part of the Refinishing Tech 563 Squadron, working on the Argus aircraft. In 1981, he returned to CFB Shearwater to maintain Sea King helicopters, before completing his service at CFB Cold Lake, Alberta, where he worked on CF-5 jets. Moe took great pride in his time as a Royal Canadian Dragoon, especially serving on the front lines in both tank and reconnaissance squadrons during his time in Europe.

Following his retirement, Moe returned to Hackett’s Cove, where he embraced community life. Noticing a lack of opportunities for local youth, he helped establish a Sea Cadet Corps alongside a friend. This initiative led to the successful launch of RCSCC 328 St. Margaret’s Bay in 1997, where Moe served as Commanding Officer until 2008.

Moe will be remembered for his warm personality, natural storytelling ability, and his unmistakable laugh. In retirement, he enjoyed attending car shows—particularly those featuring antique cars—as well as fishing and dancing.

He was predeceased by his parents, Doris and Thomas Morash, and his brother, Garvie Morash. Moe is survived by his wife, Rowena, of Northwood Park Manor; his son Ralph (Hackett’s Cove) and daughter Julia (Victoria, BC); his siblings Ruby (predeceased by Terry) and Barry (Diane); sister-in-law Janet (Garvie); as well as several nieces and nephews.

Moe’s legacy of service, leadership, and community involvement will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
