Obituary of Gary Alan Henneberry

HENNEBERRY, Gary Alan – 73 of Spryfield, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, with his brothers Bruce and Paul by his side. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Alan and Dorothy(Jennex) Henneberry. Gary held a special place in the family as the first Henneberry boy of his generation.

A talented heavy equipment mechanic, Gary specialized in forklifts and dedicated over 25 years of his career to NS Tractors. Most recently, he worked four days a week for Logistics: he truly loved his work and considered his colleagues to be his "work family.”

Gary was happiest on the water. An avid fly fisherman, he found peace and camaraderie at Knowlan Lake, his favourite spot. He was also a master of fly tying, a craft he generously shared with many friends and family members. If you find yourself on the water, please cast, one of his flies and think of him. His adventurous spirit never faded; just last summer, he was scuba diving for scallops to share with those he loved.

Gary didn’t have children of his own, but he had a special bond with his nephews Adam, Todd and Mathew. They spent many hours spotting him while he was scuba diving and he taught them how to fly fish. They thought of him as a second father. He also had a special place in his heart for great nephews Austin and Hayden who spent many hours fishing

with Uncle Gary and learning all his fishing secrets.

Gary also enjoyed Wednesday night card games at the Ketch Harbour Hall. A great lover of dogs, Gary always kept a box of treats in his truck for his "doggie friends." He is surely being greeted now by the wagging tails of his beloved black labs, Buddy and Beauty. Known for his friendly nature, Gary loved to chat and was always the first to lend a hand to a neighbour or friend.

Gary will be deeply missed by the love of his life and partner, Monica Currie of Spryfield; brothers, Bruce (Heather) of East Pennant, and Paul (Michelle) of Williamswood; nephews and niece, Adam (Justine), Todd (Erica), Mathew, Brent (Celeste), and Trina (Joseph); seven great-nieces and nephews; step-sons Dennis (Lori) and Jason (Tanya) and a large circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the QEII Health Sciences Centre ER, 6.1, 5.1 for your care and kindness.

Cremation has taken place under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, Halifax. Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday May 16th 11:00 am at St. James United Church, Sambro, with Rev. Helene Burns officiating.  Donations can be made in Gary’s memory to St. James United Church, Sambro or a charity of your choice. Interment to follow in the St. James United Church Cemetery.
