Sending very sincere condolences on the passing of Karen. I feel like I have lost a sister, having grown up in a tight knit neighbourhood where parents were everyone’s parents and the youngsters siblings to all. We played, grew up together and though we never used the word ‘love’, that’s what we experienced. To lose Karen is to lose a part of our Cornishtown Rd gang. We may have lived as adults in other places but when we had the occasion to see each other it seemed no time had passed. I am so very sorry I cannot attend her service but please know I am there in spirit. Bless you all.

Karen was a wonderful person. I got to know her when the VG performed its first heart transplant. I was managing the PR surrounding the event and Karen was so helpful. As head nurse on that unit she was fiercely protective of the patient but realistic about the media interest. She had so much energy and enthusiasm and was so clearly devoted to nursing. Over the years whenever I ran into her at the hospital or on the street or at the Athens restaurant we would stop to chat. I always came away with a smile on my face. She was such a character! My deepest condolences to the MacRury and the Sweet families. Such a loss.

My Aunt Karen was an incredible nurse, educator, and overall a very compassionate person. She had a large influence on my career and the person I am today. Any questions or advice I needed she would always be in my corner with an endless amount of knowledge.
Beyond her accomplishments she was simply a great aunt to my brother and me. I will always be grateful for her support and love she showed us throughout our lives. She will be missed dearly.

My sincere condolences to you Wayne, Allison and the MacRury family. I had worked with Karen since the 1980’s. We were both staff nurses. Karen was a “float nurse” , working part time while attending university. We worked together as managers and she then became my nursing director. Her expertise was always in cardiac nursing so i was fortunate to work with her in this area. Karen was a strong leader. She expected the same from her managers and allowed them the opportunity to do just that. The nursing profession benefited from having Karen as such a strong advocate. Rest in peace Karen. You will be missed.

I had the pleasure of meeting Karen when, like her, I moved from Sydney to Halifax to practise nursing.
I think the first time we met may have been at Dal. Capers have a way of finding each other — that, and her infectious laugh, which could be heard throughout the Forrest Building.
Later, I had the chance to work with her during Hurricane Juan, when she was a VP at Capital Health. I was a new manager at the time, and I looked to her for guidance more than once. She was kind, fair, honest, and more authentic than anyone I knew then — or have come to know in the 20 years since.
Karen was an expert. Nurses used to say she was one of the few senior leaders who could run an entire hospital one minute and jump into patient care the next — in Critical Care, at that.
I also got to spend time with Karen at the rinks, watching our daughters play ringette. Allison, you were an all-star in her eyes. You could always count on Allison’s team having the best hospitality suite whenever Halifax hosted a tournament. One year, Karen even tucked away egg salad sandwiches for my parents, who were visiting from Cape Breton. She quickly became everyone’s favourite team mom.
Years later, I heard nursing student after nursing student sing Karen’s praises. Little did they know they were standing on the shoulders of a giant — and she was the one who helped lift them there.
Wayne, Allison, Anne, Daniel, and David, thank you for sharing your wife, mother, and sister with the rest of us. May you find peace in the days and months ahead, knowing how deeply she was loved.

Karen was simply an amazing person. I first came to know her when we both were members of the NS Chapter of CACCN in late 80s. Instantly knew she was my kind of person. I had great respect for Karen’s leadership style. She combined courage with consideration as she led and mentored others. She was highly regarded by all who knew her. She had a wonderful Cape Breton personality that made others laugh and brought out the best in everyone. She cut to the chase when needed. She was a principle-centred leader. Karen will be very missed.
