Karen Elizabeth MacRury-Sweet

May 29, 1958 — May 11, 2026

Karen Elizabeth MacRury-Sweet of Halifax, Nova Scotia, born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, passed away on May 11, 2026, at the age of 67. A devoted nurse, educator and leader, Karen dedicated her life to the care and development of others.

Karen was a graduate of Holy Angels High School and received her nursing education at the Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing and Dalhousie University. She held the credentials of RN, BN, MEd, and MN and has EXTRA Fellowship. Over a distinguished career at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Karen served as a Registered Nurse, Unit Manager, Director of Health Services and Director of Nursing, and acted as Interim Vice‑President. She also worked as Clinical Placement Coordinator and as a part‑time professor at Dalhousie University School of Nursing, where she was known for her mentorship and commitment to nursing education and patient‑centered care.

Karen loved to travel, took pleasure in giving to others, and was always ready to host and entertain. She enjoyed singing along to Mamma Mia, was a wonderful cook, and opened her home and heart to family and friends.

Survived by devoted husband of 31 years, Wayne Sweet. Karen was a wonderful mother to Allison Sweet, daughter (Wesley MacDonald). She was a wonderful Nanny to granddaughter Charlotte MacDonald. She was also survived by brothers Daniel MacRury (Donna MacRury) and David MacRury; sister Anne MacIntyre (Howie MacIntyre); mother‑in‑law Margaret Sweet; and many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by: Father Arthur (Archie) Joseph MacRury; Mother Elizabeth Beatrice MacRury (Brown); and father‑in‑law Gerald Sweet.

Donations in Karen’s memory may be made to YMCA Halifax or Feed Nova Scotia.

She will be deeply missed by family, colleagues and friends whose lives she touched with compassion, humor, and boundless hospitality.

Cremation and arrangements have been entrusted to J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, N.S. In keeping with Karen’s wishes a visitation will be held on Friday May 15, 2026, from 6-8pm at J. Albert Walkers Funeral Home, Halifax. Funeral will be held at Stella Maris Church, Halifax on Thursday May 21, 2026, at 11 am. God Bless Karen
