I have fond memories of my Uncle Godfrey. I remember going Christmas Tree hunting in the woods with him as a child and our families going dog sledding near Five Islands Lake or camping at Hubbards beach/camp grounds.
Godfrey loved working with his hands and being outdoors. He was always in the tool shed or working in his vegetable garden or cooking. For years, he faithfully planted, tended and harvested from his own garden: cukes, tomatoes, squash, peas and a wide variety of yummy veggies. He loved to hunt deer and go fishing in his younger days. He also loved to dance at the legion and in the 1970's he and his wife (Jeanne) won some awards for their square dancing.
Godfrey worked as a young man for Farmers Dairy. He later was self-employed as a painter, dry wall plastered and handyman. He did excellent work and was in demand for his quality work. As he got older, he worked for MacDonald's Restaurant in Halifax (for over 20 years) as the maintenance, janitor, repairman specialist. Receiving, a nice retirement watch from them for his service - he was quite proud to show others this watch. After he retired around 65/70; he devoted his time to wood carving and relief carving. He became a skilled folk artist making wood carvings of mounties, lumberjacks, dogs, birds and the like. Though very modest about his art - he made exceptional pieces and had a lovely (God) given talent.
I will miss my Uncle, but I have a Christian hope, to see him again on resurrection day - God willing.
