Obituary of Joan Virginia Mombourquette

Surrounded by family, our Mom passed away peacefully at the QEII HSC, VG Site, on Monday, March 24, 2014.  Born in Halifax on February 12, 1929 she was the youngest child of the late Porter and Annie (Sampson) Chisholm.  Beloved wife of Henry (Albert); dear mother of Judy (Randy Morgan) and children, Adrian, Jennifer (Jason Turple) and Erin (Chris Donnelly) of Ottawa; Eddy, and son, Tom; Stephen, and son, Brandon; Danny, and daughter, Emilie; Marlene (Ron Hudson), and daughter, Brittany; Cathy (Mike McConnell), and children, Mandy (Joey Dionne) of Boston, and Sean; Paul (Lynn Grant), and children, Jessica (Anthony Bartlett), Nicholas (Trisha), Dylan and Hannah; Denise (Dwight Barnes), and children, Julie and Neil; Margo Johnson, and children, Jesse and Morgan (Ben Kostal).  Mom always enjoyed the visits from her great-grandchildren, Jordan and Joshua Webb, Avery Dionne, Sydney and Nathan Turple, Marshall Donnelly and Haley Mombourquette.  She is survived by sisters, Clarita Cane and Grace (the late Bernie) Dundon (Kingston, ON), many nieces, nephews and their families. Mom was predeceased by her sister, Anna (Lawrence) Willett, and brothers, Patrick (Imo), Aubrey (Sadie) and Michael (Betty). Besides raising a busy family, Mom was very active in the development of Spryfield Little League and Spryfield (Chebucto) Minor Hockey.  A former volunteer on the information desk of the IWK Health Centre she spent much of her quiet time knitting finger puppets and hats for the IWK.  Her other pastimes included bowling, quilting, gardening, watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play hockey or perform in school concerts or plays.   In later years, bingo, cruising the high seas and watching Sidney Crosby gave her great enjoyment.    Mom’s favourite day of year was Christmas Eve when all the family would get together and wait for Santa’s arrival.   We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the wonderful staff of 8.1 (Stroke Unit) at the Halifax Infirmary and 4B (Transition Unit) at the VG Site for the excellent care and support they provided to Mom and her family. Cremation has taken place under the care of J. A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, where a celebration of Mom’s life will be held on Friday, March 28 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral Mass will take place at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, March 29 at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Spryfield.  Family flowers only.  If so desired donations in Mom’s memory may be made to the QEII 8.1 Stroke Unit, the QEII 4B Transitional Care Unit or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
