Obituary of Shirley T. Demone

85, Halifax. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Shirley was a daughter to the late George and Kathleen Maltus. Sister to the late Marie Spicer and Mike Maltus. Loving and patient wife of 57 years to Charles Demone. Caring, gentle mom to the late Debbie Demone Publicover. An amazing friend and family member to many others. Mom had a wonderful full life. Raised three kids. Adored six grandchildren, who she loved with her whole being. Never falling asleep without a prayer for each one of them. Mom worked many years at Sears. They travelled to some amazing parts of North America. Her and dad had a cottage in Bayswater for many years. The friendships they made on Cottage Road were life long friendships. The fun times they had were many. But with that full wonderful life came many very difficult times. Mom lost her mom as a little girl. She was born with a lot of health problems which required many surgeries as a youngster. And one of the worst tragedies of her life was losing her daughter Debbie ten years ago. Following that her husband passed away. You don’t get the kind of strength that mom had without having difficult times in your life. Her catholic faith was her biggest strength. A regular at church, a place where she felt most at peace. Mom bowled for many years. She and dad danced every chance they got. Mom volunteered many years at the senior home. She also sang with a group of seniors. Over the last few years of living alone she became quite independent. We are so proud of our mother for being able to endure such painful times and become stronger and live fully every day. Mom saw the good in everyone. She and dad were the most giving people I know. It was a part of who they were. Family, charities and strangers alike. It was just the right thing to do. Mom leaves behind her son Robert, daughter Cathy (Eddie) and her grandchildren Jeffrey (Meris), Lisa-Jane, Tyler, Bradley, Alisha and Julia. Son in law Tyrill Publicover. And also close family friend Pam Turpin Demone. Shirley’s loving sister and brother in law, Hilda and Joe Shea. They were such a huge part of mom being able to live independently. The three of them were inseparable. Many nieces and nephews. Shirley’s niece, Janet Gates was also a very important part of her life. They became extremely close over the last few years. Her sister in law, Kay Kent, was a close companion. They enjoyed many outings together. She leaves behind a sister in law, Shirley Demone. Mom was so ready to go home to God and to be reunited with Dad and Debbie.
