Brian Hicks

Obituary of Brian William Hicks

July 20, 1956 - April 26, 2024

It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Brian William Hicks on Friday, April 26, 2024. Born in Whitbourne, Newfoundland, Brian is predeceased by his parents Muriel (Suley) and Harold, and brother Harold Jr. He is survived by his brother Robert, niece Catherine, nephew James, and great niece Martina, of Ontario.

Brian spent much of his life working in the IT field with the Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia and Compass Communications (he spoke of his colleagues often!).  Yet in contrast to the "office" life, Brian was a lover of nature and animals.  Having recently moved to a more rural setting with new to Nova Scotia friends, Larry and Ben, Brian was experiencing a new lease on life as provincial tour guide and establishing his own animal sanctuary outside his new home.  Spending many hours on his own perch outside watching the birds, squirrels, and rabbits, he also offered a welcome smile and hello to neighbours on the passing trail. The last 6 months, despite health challenges, saw a new spark in his eye and invigorated tone in his voice.

And as much as Brian loved nature, he also loved his friends and family, regularly boasting about his great niece Martina of whom he was extremely proud.  His weekly Sunday chat with niece Cathy was also looked forward to and meant the world to him.  He was also quick to support others in need, even when it might mean less for himself.  No surprise then, even after his passing, his directions to support various not-for-profits that help others is at the top of his list!  His wit and selflessness will not be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, Brian has requested donations to Feed Nova Scotia and Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank.

At Brian's request there will be no formal service, however, on July 20, 2024, a gathering will take place at Crystal Crescent Beach (first parking lot, far left on the beach) at 10 AM to say goodbye as we release Brian to the beauty of the waves he so loved.  Following the beach, folks are welcome to stop by Larry & Bens (location to be provided while at Crystal Crescent).

Arrangements have been entrusted to J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax.
