Obituary of Edith Lorraine Flemming
Herring Cove (formally Ketch Harbour) died peacefully on Saturday, February 29, 2020at Arborstone Enhanced Care Nursing Home. Mom was the last surviving member of her family. Born in Halifax, June 7, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Kathleen (Redden) Gray from West Pennant. At the age of 16, Mom left West Pennant and went to work for Bremner’s Grocery on Chebucto Road in Halifax. In 1957, Mom landed a job at the Red Cross Society as a Stenographer. She became our fulltime caregiver from 1960 onward. In later years, Mom looked after the office of Dad’s business, Ken’s Plumbing & Heating until his retirement.
Mom lived her married life in Ketch Harbour and was a great church worker for St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church. In Mom’s younger years, she loved to square dance, bowl, knit and have coffee around the community with friends and spend time at the cottage. For the last twenty years, Mom lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Herring Cove. Mom leaves behind her sons Darrell (Nancy), Portuguese Cove, Bruce (Anna), Timberlea and daughter Carla (Kevin) Cormier, Herring Cove. Grandchildren Joshua (Tara), Herring Cove, Jennifer (Chad) Garrison, Sambro, Austin and Eric Flemming, Danielle and Marc Cormier. Great-Grandchildren Theo, Laurel and Audrey. Sister In-Laws, Bernice Gray and Madeline Gray. Mom was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Kenneth Daniel Flemming and a daughter, Mary in infancy. Mom was also predeceased by her brothers Gerald, Bernard, sister Ella (Gray) Watson and nephew Michael Gray.
The family would like to thank Arborstone staff, 4th floor for their superb care in Mom’s last 9 ½ months. Home Instead for Mom to have companionship, many games of Scrabble and Northwood’s Personal Care Workers, VON for their care when Mom was still at home. For Melissa Henneberry who stayed with Mom during vacations. For those who visited, chatted and sang for Mom, we are truly grateful.
Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2205) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax. There is no visitation at Mom’s request.
Funeral Mass will be held at Stella Maris Parish - St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church site, Herring Cove with Father Jose Thomas presiding, on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at 10 am. There will be a reception following in the parish hall to greet the family. Interment will be at the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Ketch Harbour at a later date.
