Dear Janette & Family-
I was shocked and saddened to hear that John Robert had a stroke and passed away so suddenly.
Being a member of Highland Heritage, I had the pleasure of fiddling with and getting to know John Robert - a kind, soft spoken, true gentleman and a fine fiddler. I regret that I never did have the pleasure of seeing him step dance. Our Highland Heritage group will not be the same without his presence. A lovely man, that I know, leaves behind many wonderful memories for all those that knew him.
Thinking of you with loving thoughts and deepest, sincere sympathy.

Deepest condolences from the Henderson family in Toronto. Although I haven't seen Mr Gillis in over 30 years, he was an important part of my early life. As a child, I spent several happy years at the Gillis house, as Cheryl was my best friend and her mom babysat me. Mr Gillis loved his family so much and was so proud of his home. An extremely hard worker, he was always on the go with some sort of project. And he had an extraordinary talent for creating things, often adding his own ideas and innovations. Whether a toy, or a deck or a swing set, he could make or do anything. I am so happy he lived such a full, rich life filled with love, family, music and faith. I will always remember him as a calm, patient and thoughtful gentlemen who afforded kindness to everyone he knew. RIP Mr. Gillis. I will think of you often.
Mrs Gillis, Cheryl, Carla, Lynette and family, we wish you comfort during this extremely sad time. I know he is looking after you, and he is in good hands too!

Janette and family, Mary and I were so saddened to learn of John Robert's stroke and subsequent passing. He was a wonderful Cape Breton fiddler and step dancer, and will be greatly missed by his fellow musicians from Highland Heritage. I so enjoyed his quiet manner and wonderful knowledge of all the tunes we played together. Our get-togethers at the Bedford Leisure Centre will never be the same without him. His passing is a great loss to you and all who knew him.

He will never be forgotten. I can picture him sitting at the kitchen table in Fairview with Janette's biscuits. It was always good to have a talk with him on the Hall Pond path (Janette would usually be far ahead of us!) Such a kind man. May all of you cherish the memories. If you need an angel watching over you, he'll be doing the best job ever for you!

Janette and Family, I was saddened to read about John Robert’s passing. I remember so well taking step dancing lessons in your home. I also remember Jimmima and I having great talks with John Robert as we prepared for the Cape Breton Club dances, in Halifax, in the ‘80’s. I enjoyed many a set with John Robert, at the Halifax Dances, when we were teaching people how to square dance. John Robert was a True gentleman and Loyal Cape Bretoner.
God Bless you all,

Jeanette: we are “the girls” from 5 Alton Drive. It was such a pleasure to have known John Robert all those many years ago when he built our deck and did other jobs ifor us I was often reminded to stop talking to John Robert and let him work! Always with his quick wit and Cape Breton humour, he would reply, “ It’s ok it’s all pensionable time!” He had a greatness and we were drawn to him.
