Dear Anne,
Only this week have we heard of your mother's death. Though I only spoke to Cousin Katharine once or twice a year, it was always very meaningful and reminded me of my Cowan descent. It must be a great loss for you and your family, and with Meme no longer being with us as well, it feels as though the last of that generation has passed on. When my husband, Don, was a bachelor minister in Springville, Pictou County, your parents encouraged our engagement when they sent a reassuring note to my mother. Cousin Katharine also encouraged Don's research into Charles Cowan's life and the publication of his biography. We send our best wishes to you, along with our sympathy in your loss,
Judy and Don MacLeod

Dear Anne,
I always remember the sparkle in your mother's eyes. Her outlook was measured, yet positive, good-humoured
and interested.
During the 1960's when I was at Kings-Edgehill, Katharine and your father John both played an influential and inspirational
role in my growing up. I spent the entire summer of 1965 living with a French family in Bordeaux, immersed in French language
and culture. Our good friend Harry Jost did the same, with another family in another French city. It was an experience to enhance a
lifetime, for me , and for Harry. For this your mother was completely responsible.
Katharine and John were together a dynamic, impactful and engaging couple. He was a force of nature. She was a natural empathizer.
After graduating from Kings, for many years I would once in a while visit Katharine. She was always welcoming, warm, witty, curious.
I send my sympathy and best regards to you Anne, and to Archie and your daughters.

DearAnne,
This is just a brief note to express my condolences on the passing of your mother announced in the recent obituary in the Chronicle Herald . From her obituary I gathered that she was a remarkable woman whose courage, caring, and wisdom affected so many people both inside and outside her family. Knowing you so well from our years together at Dalhousie Law School, and then admiring from afar the common sense, humanity, and legal analysis of your decisions since, I was not surprised. The apple does not fall far from the tree! Rest in Peace Katharine. Peace to you and your family Anne.

What an amazing life she had. I loved my tea time with her before we moved to Ottawa in 2007. Such great stories, a kind heart and always took great interest in how everyone in my family was doing. I like to think that she and John are catching up and enjoying being together again.

I am saddened by the news of Mrs. D's passing and send my deepest condolences to Anne and her family. I shall always remember the kindness shown and the guidance given to a young fatherless 12-year-old boy by the Derrick team while I attended KCS from 63-69. Even today, some of my fondest childhood memories take me back to the school on the hill and the wonderful people I had the privilege and good fortune to meet. Both Mrs. D and Mr. D impacted my life immensely and I shall always be thankful for the time I was afforded to share with them. Blimp

Dear Anne, I want to send condolences to you and your family on the passing of your Mother— a dear lady. I did not know your parents during my Edgehill days — the two schools were separate entities way back then , except for school dances — which were few and far between! Your Mother and I connected many years later at the iconic retail establishment, Mills Bros. , where I helped her on many occasions— finding just the right clothing item — a bit of a challenge but always a successful and fun experience! We became friends and invitations to afternoon tea were always a pleasure for me to receive — an introduction to Lapsang souchong tea , a fond memory . It was an honour and a delight to have known Katherine.
Warm Regards,
Sue Rubin

Dearest Katherine. Such lovely memories I have, memories of her and John at Lahave, at the apartment in Clayton Park and at Katherine's lovely condo at Oxford Court. It was tea time and I was invited!
Lively conversation, a touch of instruction in speaking German, of which I can remember nothing and of course darjeeling tea and plenty of sweets. A long life, of which she touched so many others in her special way. I am so fortunate in knowing Katherine and John.

Sending our condolences to Anne and her family. KCS played an important role in the lives of so many young people, and while John was larger than life and set important standards for us all Mrs. Derrick also conveyed important life lessons. She was kind, thoughtful, bright and insisted on bringing out the best in those of us lucky enough to be her students.
I am grateful for having had the opportunity to know her and to learn from her.
