Obituary of Bert Sheffield King
92, of Halifax, passed away October 5, 2010, in the QEII after a short illness. Bert was the last surviving member of his family of 11 children, born in Woodstock, N.B. on December 5,1917 to Harris and May King. Bert was an avid reader and enjoyed watching T.V. and his cats. Bert graduated from Woodstock High School, also Woodstock Vocational School and attended U.N.B. Fredericton. Flying officer King served as a wireless operator, air gunner in 420 Squadron in the RCAF where he flew 39 missions in Bomber Command in Halifax and Wellington Bombers. After the war he worked for Canada Customs and Excise and retired after 35 years of service. Bert was a member of the Spryfield Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. He attended St. Paul’s United Church, Old Sambro Rd., Halifax. He will be missed as a loving husband and father. He is survived by his loving wife Carolyn and son Samuel and his wife Wendy. Arrangements are under the care of J.A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. 149 Herring Cove Rd. (477-5601) where a funeral service will be held on Saturday October 9 at 2 p.m., Rev. Jeanne M. Manning-Stright officiating. As part of the service there will be a Royal Canadian Legion Ceremony. Donations may be made to the St. Paul’s United Church Fund.
