Obituary of Herbert Romaine Foss

Foss, Herbert Romaine – 88, of Halifax, NS passed away unexpectedly on August 4th, 2011 in Halifax Nova Scotia with his beloved wife Doreen by his side. Herbie was born July 23rd, 1923 in Roseblanche, Nfld and was married to Doreen on April 16th, 1948 in Schreiber, ON. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage and had two children Jeff and Lori-Kyle. On August 6th Doreen, Jeff and his children Nathan, Amanda and Matthew, and Lori, her husband Lyle and son Tyler held a family farewell with Herbie at J. Albert Walker Funeral Home in Halifax, followed by dinner out on their husband, father and grandfather, and fireworks in his memory at dusk. Online messages of condolences may be posted at the J. Herbie served his country honourably as a member of the Highland Light Infantry of Canada and Provost Corps from September 13th, 1940 to February 9th, 1946, including the long fight through Northwest Europe. After World War 2 Herbie joined the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and served in Northern Ontario for several years before returning to his first love, the Canadian Forces. He re-enrolled in 1953 and served with the Military Police for the next twenty-five years in both Canada and Europe. Herbie enjoyed a long and prestigious career and retired in December 1978 as a Chief Warrant Officer in the Special Investigation Unit. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Air Force Association of Canada and a past member of the Masonic Lodge. Herbie was a talented harmonica player, wood carver and loved a daily round or two of cards with his wife. He loved all sports but especially hockey and he was a dedicated Leaf fan. Over the years, Herbie coached teams in both minor hockey and men’s hockey. He also managed his beloved 4 (F) Wing Raiders in the mid-60’s. Herbie is survived by his wife Doreen of Halifax, NS; his son Jeffrey and his children Matthew, Amanda and Nathan; his daughter Lori-Kyle and husband Lyle Herod and son Tyler; his sisters Anne Heath, her children Paul and Allan and their families; Sophia Ward, her children Barb and Sharon and their families all of Cambridge, ON; his sister-in-law Lorraine Weaver and husband Bill, Terrace Bay, ON, their daughters Billie, Wendy and Daryl and their families; his brother-in-law Barry who was like a son to him, his wife Brenda, Terrace Bay, their children Alana and Shane and their families; and the children of Maureen and Gary Harper (both deceased), Loreen, Bobby and Doug and their families. Herbie was predeceased by his parents Sophia and George Foss; his brothers Bill, Tom, John and Red and his sister Sue, but will be remembered with much love by their families. A military funeral and celebration of Herbie’s life will be held on April 16th, 2012 at Beechwood National Cemetery of Canada, Ottawa, ON. This date was chosen to coincide with Herbie and Doreen’s 64th wedding anniversary. Interment will take place at 1:00 PM followed by a reception.
