Obituary of Edward Arthur "Art" Leights
74, Halifax, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on May 1, 2012, at the V.G. Site, QEII. Art as he was fondly called was born in Belleoram, NL, on November 11, 1937, a son of the late Albert and Charlotte (Savoury) Leights. He was one of eight siblings. Art found the sea and began his career on the fishing boats at the early age of 15. He went coasting on the Pauline C. Winters. In 1972, he started working with Fisheries and Oceans, later became a mate on the Cyngus and in 1985, he became Captain of the Chebucto until his retirement in 1996. Art had a great respect for God’s creation and loved the outdoors. After he retired, he spent all his summers in Newfoundland gardening, fishing, hunting and berry picking. He was a great wine maker and enjoyed a good game of cards, especially cribbage. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 52 years, Marina (Blagdon); son, Bradley (Tanya), Williamswood; daughters, Bonita Leights, Petawawa, ON., Bernadette (David) Bond, St. John’s NL.; brothers, Onslow (Roberta), Belleoram, NL., Jobie (Faye), Upper Stewiacke, Charles (Maryann), Halifax; sisters, Ada (Joe) Domonix, Wellington, Mary Leights, Dartmouth; sisters-in-law, Maisie, Rose and Mildred Tobin, Newfoundland; thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, whom he loved unconditionally; a large number of nieces and nephews and many friends. He was predeceased by son Barry, brother John Henry. Cremation has taken place under the care of J.A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. (477-5601), where visitation will be held on Friday May 4 from 7-9 p.m.. There will be a memorial service held at a later date in from the St. John The Evangelist Church in Boxey, Newfoundland, with the interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory to the Kidney Foundation or the St. John The Evangelist Church, Boxey NL.
