Obituary of Juanita Elaine Oakes

70, Halifax, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2012 in the VG Site QEII, surrounded by her family and closest friends. Born in Amherst on August 24, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Osborne and Teresa (Belle) Brooks. Juanita worked as a hairdresser then moved on to Central Guarantee (Central Trust). She later worked at McCurdy’s Printing and Sears Call Center then on to sales in children’s wear. She had many friends and family, she loved to have them over for a meal. She was a very kind and loving person who thought of others before herself, she lived life to the fullest and loved to laugh.  She enjoyed bowling, darts, cards and of course going to Neptune. She loved going to the cottage to spend time with family and friends and enjoyed going to her club group and being very involved in her church family. She was a member of Fairview United Church, working on the seniors’ luncheon, outreach group, cleaning the church and helping out in the nursery. She was the president of the Bessie Fraser Unit and was honored with the lifetime membership award of The UCW. She was also a member of the Fairview Legion. She is survived by son, Tony (Margo) Oakes; daughter, Teresa (Cyril) Prime, both of Spryfield; grandchildren, Suzie, Cassie, Tyler and Jeremy; brothers, Edward (Jean) Brooks, Arizona; Harry (Audrey) Brooks, British Columbia; sisters, Linda Strathearn, Amherst; Betty Lou (Mel) Terris, Riverview, NB; Eleanor Brooks, Halifax; sisters in-law, Charlotte, Theresa and Lorraine Brooks; close family friends, Myrtle Kelly and Beverly Pattison, both of Halifax. She was predeceased by her former husband, Paul Oakes; brothers, Reid, Phillip and Bradford Brooks; sister, Patsy Brooks. A Memorial service will by held on Tuesday, July 31 at 11 AM at Fairview United Church. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
