Obituary of John C. Manning

MANNING, John C., P.Eng. - 88, of Halifax, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 in Arborstone Enhanced Care, with his loving family at his side.  John was born in 1924 in Falmouth, N.S., son of the late Charles R. Manning and Mabel V. (Wilson) Manning. He attended school in Falmouth and Windsor, graduating from Acadia University and Nova Scotia Technical College.  He was employed as a Professional Engineer by Nova Scotia Light & Power Corporation.  He was a life member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia, and for many years was a member of the Engineering Institute of Canada, the Canadian Society of Electrical Engineers and the Illuminating Engineering Society. For many years John was a member of St. John’s United Church, Halifax, and over the years served on the Sunday School Executive, the Committee of Stewards, The Session and various committees. In later years he joined St. Paul’s United Church in Spryfield. John and his wife, Mary, enjoyed square and round dancing together for most of their married life. John was deeply attached to his family and enjoyed spending time with them at home and at the family cottage in Malagash, Nova Scotia. John is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters Rev. Jeanne Manning (Kenn) Stright; Dr. Sylvia (Terry) Craig; sister, Katherine Pye; and grandchildren, Jonathan (Amanda) Stright; Kristelle Stright; Naomi Stright (Romy) Aquino; Peter Craig; Tessa (Greg) Dennis; and several nieces and cousins. John was predeceased by brother, Randolph (Mary) and their son Terry; brothers-in-law, Allison Pye and William (June) Dodge. A service of remembrance will be held on Sunday, October 7th, at 2 pm in St. Paul’s United Church, 173 Old Sambro Road, Halifax, with a reception to follow in the Church Hall. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Paul’s United Church, or to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. The family wishes to extend their most sincere gratitude to the wonderful caring and supportive staff on the third floor of Arborstone Enhanced Care.
