Obituary of Donald Joseph Campagna
91, Halifax, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 7, 2012 in the QEII Health Sciences Center. Born in L’Ardoise Cape Breton, he was a son of the late Pierre Adjutor and Elizabeth (Della Rosa Bona) Campagna.
Donald served in the Second World War in the Halifax Rifles and 23rd Army Tank Battalion. Don accomplished a great deal in his life, starting with a grade school education to operating numerous businesses including: taxi driver for several companies and then created his own company and was recognized as Halifax’s oldest and longest operating drivers. He formed Campagna Real Estate and was also a commercial fisher and charterman out of Herring Cove. He was a longtime member of Halifax Longshoremen’s Association 629 and retired from Halterm and Ceres as a RORO operator. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was passionate about a good game of crib.
Don is survived by wife, Valerie and Valerie’s daughter, Kimlee; children, Donald (Jean Scott), Halifax; Wayne (Faye White), Kennetcook; Sharon (Clary) Croft, Halifax; Darlene (David) Crouch, Hamilton; Marie (Robert) Corbett, Ketch Harbour; grandchildren, Paul, Peter, Andrew and Steven; and great-grandchildren; godson, Donald Melvin. He was predeceased by wives, Marguerite (Parker), Marjorie (Brown), Lucille (Young); infant children, David and Diane.
Arrangements are under the direction of J. A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax (477-5601), where visitation will be held on Thursday, October 11 from 7-9 PM and Friday, October 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 13 at 11 AM from St. James Anglican Church, Herring Cove, Rev. Alan Fry officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Don’s memory may be made to St. James Anglican Church.
