Obituary of Matthew Victor Arthur

ARTHUR, Matthew Victor – 83, Williamswood, passed away peacefully, after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Roy and Edith (Newland) Arthur. Matt spent 40 years as a Longshoreman with Local 269, operating the crane and every other machine on the waterfront; he was a legend in the ILA. His passion was motorcycles, which he rode until the age of 73. He also enjoyed hunting and traveling, taking many memorable trips with family and friends. Matt was a kind, giving and wonderful man who loved his family dearly. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his best friend,  love of his life and wife of 23 years, Kathleen (Juteau), Williamswood; children, Paul (Colleen), Sambro; Janice (Mike) Wilson, Prospect; Sharon (Billy) Slaunwhite, Williamswood; step-children, Jimmy (Donna) Doyle, Mount Uniacke; Susan (Phillip) Payne, Williamswood; Ralph (Sylvia) Doyle, Spryfield; Michael (Heather) Doyle and Nancy (Greg) Lynch, both of Williamswood; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Matt was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by brothers, Jim and Roy; sisters, Daisy, Edna and Gertrude "Gertie"; step-son, Paul. Arrangements are under the direction of J. A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax (477-5601), where visitation will be held on Sunday, March 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral service will be held on Monday, March 18 at 10 AM from the funeral home chapel, with a reception to follow. Interment will take place in Oakridge Memory Gardens.
