Obituary of Edgar Nelson "Eggie" Umlah
83, Brookside. We, the Umlah family are proud to announce that Edgar Nelson Umlah was "called up" to the big leagues on Saturday, January 11, 2014, where he now joins brother, Gregory and many fellow teammates that shared his passion for softball over his 35 year career. Edgar was the son of the late George Allan and Myrtle Evelyn (Topple) Umlah.
As a young man he worked at the CNR railroad before joining the National Harbours Board in the late 1950’s. During his career there, he rose through the ranks, retiring in 1988 from the position of Acting Assistant Harbour Master. Besides his family, his passions included hunting, fishing, gardening and softball; in which he excelled as a pitcher. He enjoyed these endeavours until his health would not allow him to continue.
Left to cheer him on from the sidelines are his wife and best friend of 60 years, Lillian "Lou" (Tobin); sons, Kevin (Sharon), Glenn (Corinne), Reid (Pamela); twin daughters, Sharon (Lester) Deviller and Rhonda Umlah; "Grampy's" nine grandchildren, each of whom were special to him, Aaron (Adrienne), Sarah, Geoffrey (Lindsay), Brett, Kelly, Sydney, Cameron, Ileana and Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Aliyah and Heidie. He is also survived by brother, Laurence; sister, Iris (Mike) Shea; close nephew, Todd (Lisa) Umlah and a large extended family.
The family would like to offer special thanks to all those involved in caring for Edgar; Dr. Harris Crooks and his assistant Jane, at the Hatchet Lake Medical Centre; emergency room staff, paramedics and Dr. Haroon and the staff on ward 8.2 of the Q. E. II Health Sciences Center. Their professionalism and respect allowed the family much comfort this past week; also, a special acknowledgement to nurse Bernadette for her attention and exceptional care during these past few days.
Cremation has taken place under the care of J. A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, where visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16 from 1-3 PM.
