Obituary of Marcel Pierre LaChance

Age 80, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2014 at Halifax Infirmary surrounded by family. Born July 31, 1934 in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, he was the son of the late Emile and Marie (Violette) LaChance. He spent his early years growing up in Warren, Ontario working on the family farm and the Pine Poultry farm. Married in 1962 in Cardston, Alberta. He is survived by his wife Jeanne (Goutier), one step-daughter, three daughters, two sons, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two sisters. He was predeceased by a younger sister. When he was 27 years old he moved to British Columbia and worked as a logger, painter, and cabinet maker. He was proud of the Pan-Abode log home he built himself in Delta. In 1972 he moved to Quesnel where he worked until retirement in 1994 at the Cariboo Pulp and Paper mill as an Industrial First-Aid Attendant/Security Guard. After retiring, he moved to Herring Cove, then to Spryfield, Nova Scotia. He was honoured to volunteer as a RCMP Auxiliary Constable from 1963 to 1978 in Cloverdale and Quesnel, for which he received the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Century of Service Award. In 2001 he joined the Nova Scotia RCMP Veteran’s Association. He enjoyed volunteering his time with the Quesnel Beavers and Cubs as Assistant Leader. In 1983 he joined the Knights of Columbus in Quesnel where he was a Grand Knight for several years. Later he received the Fourth Degree and served over 170 Honour Guards. He was Eucharistic Minister at St. Anne’s (Quesnel) and St. Michael’s (Halifax) parishes. In 2005 he received an award for 75 blood donations. He enjoyed backyard birdwatching, camping, canoeing, hunting, fishing, and RV’ing traveling across Canada several times, north to Alaska and south to the Mexican border. He was an avid Montreal Canadians fan and loved to play the game himself. He loved coffee, beer, and laughing at his own jokes. Prayer vigil and visitation from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, November 2, 2014 at J. Albert Walker Funeral Home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, November 3, 2014 at St. Michael’s Church, St. Michaels’ Ave., Spryfield, followed by hall reception then interment at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Herring Cove. Donations may be made to the Lung Association or the Canadian Blood Services.
