Obituary of Maurice Henry Martell
It is with heavy hearts that the Martell family shares the passing of Maurice Henry Martell, age 85 on January 4th, 2015. He passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit, Halifax, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney, NS on June 30th, 1929. His childhood was spent in Poulamon, Richmond County. On September 1st, 1946, at 16 years of age, he moved to Halifax and started his working career at the CN Hotel Nova Scotian. He worked there until 1967, when he started a new career as a Union Representative for Local 662- Hotel, Restaurant and Bartender Employees Union and Organizer for the International until his retirement in 1994. During that period he also served as Employee Representative on the Labour Standard Tribunal (NS) for 12 years. As well as serving as the Employee Representative on the Board of Referee Employment Insurance for 14 years. He was a life member of the NDP and a member of the Branch 152 Legion. He was a truly loving and selfless man. His strength was an inspiration to all who knew him. He leaves behind his loving wife and friend of 64 years Jeanette (nee Leblanc); his sons and their wives Morris (Karen), Mark (Sharron), Blair (Janice), his daughter Sheila (Gordon) and his daughter-in-law, Barb. He will be forever loved and missed by grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Michelle, Amy, Josh (Angela), Jessica (Ian), Sarah (Adam), Amanda (Abe), Kyle, Reiley, Aria, Brooklyn, Andrew and Alex. He was predeceased by sons Joseph at birth and Paul Henry.
Cremation has taken place under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. 149 Herring Cove Rd., where visitation will be held Thursday January 8 from 7-9p.m. Funeral mass to be held Friday January 9 at 10a.m. from St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, St. Michael’s Ave, Father Alfred Eshun. Reception to follow in church hall. Interment to take place in Mount Olivet Cemetery Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. His prayer for the world: "In the name of human rights and peace in the world, I trust in Jesus".
