Obituary of Thelma Mary Whittle

Age 89, Spryfield. With broken hearts the family announces her passing on July 25, 2015 in the Palliative Care Unit, VG site, QEII. Thelma was born Oct. 30 1925 in Bulls Cove, Newfoundland and although spending the majority of her life in Spryfield she remained a Newfoundlander at heart. She was the daughter of the late John and Margaret (Connell) Brenton. Thelma was a very generous and kind woman.  She was a member of Emmanuel Anglican Church belonging to the ACW, Elf and catering groups as well as serving on the Sanctuary Guild.  For 52 years she was a member of the Topeze Rebekah 125 Lodge. Her generosity was recognized last year with the receipt of the International Fellowship Award. She spent her lifetime doing for others. Whenever a plate of sandwiches was needed, you knew you could count on Thelma to make them. She spent countless hours donating her time visiting Melville Lodge and Arborstone, where she would often care for those younger than she. In her earlier years she would often pull the trailer and take her family camping. She would pull it as far as Sept Iles, Quebec with her children where they would join her husband who was there working. She was a remarkably strong and independent woman. Thelma loved to dance and was often seen on the dance floor at the Golden Age Club where she was a member of the Young at Hearts Group. You would also find her playing darts and she loved it when she was able to double out. She had a zest for life that is going to truly be missed. She leaves to mourn but also treasure the memories her children, Reggie (Debbie) Hillier, Brookside; Margaret Mountain, Bridgewater; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, as well as numerous friends. She was the last remaining sibling having been predeceased by her brothers, Morris; Henry and John and her sisters, Jessie and Margaret. She was the loving wife of the late Reg Hillier and Peter Whittle. Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. 149 Herring Cove Rd., where visitation will be held Wednesday July 29 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m., with a Rebekah Lodge Service at 7 p.m.. Funeral service will be Thursday July 30 at 2 p.m. from Emmanuel Anglican Church 322 Herring Cove Rd., Rev. Gloria McClure-Fraser officiating. Reception to follow in church hall. Interment to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Emmanuel Church general fund or the Canadian Cancer Society. Many thanks to the fine care she received by the doctors and nurses in the Palliative Unit of the VG.
