Proud of her family’s achievements, she looked forward to every family celebration and milestone. Born in Nail Pond, PEI, to Rosalie (Arsenault) & Michael Bernard on Aug. 23, 1927. At 17 she moved to Halifax where, 6 years later, she met and married (1950) Lorne Knox (from Skinner’s Pond, PEI). In 1955, they bought their first home in Spryfield, where they raised their family and became active members of the community. The door was always open with a meal on the table for family and friends, whether they came to visit, work, start a career, establish themselves in the city or attend to medical needs at the hospital. Velma became well-known as "Nanny Knox" to all the children she cooked for at the Spryfield Daycare Centre and was overjoyed when her own grandchildren came along. She delighted in sitting down for a game of crib to "skunk" her opponent and spending time with her many "treasured" friends. She has been a lifetime member of the C.W.L. at St. Michael’s Parish. Having spent summers in her hometown of Tignish, she returned in July to enjoy assisted living at the Tignish Seniors Coop Home, where she was welcomed with open arms and cared for dearly.
