Obituary of Laurence C. "Laurie" Umlah
Aged 86, died peacefully at his home in Spryfield on Monday, November 2, 2015. A son of the late Allan and Myrtle (Topple) Umlah, he was born December 24, 1928.
Laurie grew up in Jollimore, a keen Snipe sailor in his young days, and won the championship three years in a row with the Jollimore Juniors hockey team. Laurie spent his working life in insurance with H. N. Wrathall Insurance, Adjusters and Appraisers, and with the Provincial government as Superintendent of Insurance. He raised his family in LeiblenPark, a dedicated and loving father. He will also be remembered by many as a Sunday school teacher, hockey coach, Scout leader, fellow Reservist, and Lions Club member. He served on the Spryfield Jamboree committee and was very active in Emmanuel Anglican Church in Spryfield for many years. He was one-time president of the local Progressive Conservative association.
He was greatly loved by his 5 children, Dawn (Jim) Mills, Heather Umlah, Brian (Jackie), Gail Gionet (Danny Mabee) and Mark (Cheryl-Ann Trites); nine grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Iris (Michael) Shea and sisters-in-law, Lillian Umlah (Lou) and Noreen Banks. He was predeceased by his wife, Doris (Campbell); brothers, Greg and Edgar "Eggie".
Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, where visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 4 from 6-8 PM and Thursday, November 5 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Funeral service will be held on Friday, November 6 at 11 AM in Emmanuel Anglican Church, Spryfield.
