Obituary of John A. "Al" Blackburn

75, Halifax. After a brief and courageous battle with cancer, Al passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 28, 2015. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late William T. and Gertrude (Merlin) Blackburn. He was predeceased by brothers, Walter E., William F. and Donald J.; sister, Helen G. Weston. He is survived by sister, Jean Manuel. Al was a loyal husband to his surviving wife, Pegi; he was her hero and her best friend. He was also a generous, caring and accepting stepfather and grampy. He was a very private man, who had the utmost integrity. He was an avid crossword puzzler who also enjoyed gardening and staying close to home, but always enjoyed his daily early morning walks. An avid hockey fan, he helped coach minor hockey, in his younger years. The Chicago Black Hawks were his favorite NHL Team, he was fortunate enough to see them finally win a Stanley Cup after a 49 year drought. He was also an MLB Atlanta Braves fan.     Al was a public service employee for 39 years. The last 32 of which, he was a letter carrier for Canada Post, retiring in 1996. He was a well known and respected member of his community, who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. In keeping with Al’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. A private family interment will take place at a later date. Anyone wishing to remember Al may make a donation to the VG Site Palliative Care Unit or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
