Obituary of Emily Reid
Emily Reid, born February 10, 1920 in Montreal, died peacefully May 4, 2016 in Arborstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Daughter of Charles Albert Etchells and Alice Elizabeth (Dawson), she was predeceased by older siblings Alice, Arthur and Amy.
Married in 1950 to A. Lawson Reid (d. 1996), she was a lifelong resident of the Montreal area, moving to Pointe Claire upon marriage. She moved to Halifax in 2005 to be close to family. During her years in Pointe Claire, she was active in the Ladies Guild of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, bridge clubs, and devoted much of her time to the Kay Kerry chapter of the I.O.D.E., eventually becoming Municipal Regent for Montreal. She left school at 14 to begin her working career at Morgan's Department Store and, with the help of the I.O.D.E., completed high school and bookkeeping courses at night at Sir George Williams University and eventually served as Credit Manager at the Canada Metal Co. until 1951.
As the first member of her family born outside England, she corresponded with relatives overseas, and established lifelong relationships with cousins during trips to the UK. Mum and Dad travelled to many places, but her favourite place to host family and friends was the cottage on Green Lake in the Laurentians.
She is survived by daughters Susan Hunt (Ken), and Laurie Cunliffe (Stephen) and grandchildren Christina, Donald, Brian and David Hunt, Stuart and Catherine Cunliffe. The family thanks the 4th floor staff at Arborstone for their care and kindness the last three years.
