Obituary of Margaret Paula "Peggy" Chase (Dempsey)

Halifax, formerly Herring Cove, passed away August 18, 2016 at the Halifax Infirmary. Born on January 15, 1926 she was a daughter of the late Jim (lost at sea in 1940) and Dora (Brackett) Dempsey. Peggy attended local elementary, high schools and Maritime Business College. She served in the CWAC (WWII) during 1944/45. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Peggy was a bridge player, speed reader and a painter, a fund raiser for both civic and church, a wagon master to her two grandchildren and friend to her two great grandsons, nieces and nephews, with a special place in her heart for her double-first cousins. She made a happy home for her mother Dora for 33 years. Al and Peggy were active campers, boaters and RV’ers. They spent vacations in Antigua, Jamaica, Barbados, Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico and Las Vegas. In 1991 Al retired for the third time and they travelled to Florida in their RV, towing a car and wintered for five years. Three winters spent in their park model "Heron House" in Port Ritcey, FL. She is survived by her husband Allen Chase; grandchildren, Michelle Pelham, Herring Cove and Christian Pelham, Red Deer, Aberta; great grandsons, Austin and Ryder; her step children, Heather, David and Cynda, many nieces, nephews and fist and second cousins. She was predeceased by her first husband J. Russell Pelham; son, Stephen; daughter, Melanie both in infancy; in 1982 her son Larry, who was lost at sea at the age of 33 and son, Kevin Pelham age 65 in 2016; brothers, Jim, Bob, Bernard and Bruce Dempsey; sisters Brenda Hayes, Lucy Melrose, Clare Dempsey, Dorothy Slaunwhite, Frances Dempsey and step son Danny Chase. Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday August 23 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church Hebridean Dr. Herring Cove. Interment to take place in St. Paul’s Cemetery Herring Cove, followed by a reception in the church hall.
