Obituary of Dorothy Mildred Blakeney

BLAKENEY (BLAKENEY), Dorothy Mildred (Dot) – 97, Halifax passed away quietly and peacefully at the QEII Infirmary, Halifax, on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, just 10 days before celebrating her 75th wedding anniversary.  Born on January 28, 1921, in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Ernest Roy and Miriam Louise (Scallion) Blakeney.

Married in 1943, Dot and Reg built and moved into their home in 1959, where they raised their family.  She was a wonderful and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who devoted her life to her family. Dot will be remembered and greatly missed by all who knew and loved her for her thoughtful, loving, gracious and caring ways.   She was the epitome of a lady, who was known as a kind and giving person.  She had a great sense of humour.  Some of her many interests were knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, and baking, especially our favorites, her homemade bread and Nana’s shortbread cookies.  She was an avid gardener, and together with Reg, they grew and sold various transplants.  In her younger years, Dot enjoyed berry picking, and later in life, crossword puzzles were one of her obsessions.

Dot is survived by her loving husband of almost 75 years, Reg, her daughters, Carolyn McFarlane (John), Halifax and Janice Fennell (Jim), Red Islands, Cape Breton;, and her son Ron, Cole Harbour.  Affectionately known as Nana, she is also survived by her treasured grandchildren, John McFarlane (Stacey Laskis), their children, Laz and Audrey, Scottsdale, AZ, Scott McFarlane (Andrea Shakespeare), their daughter, Ainsley, Halifax, Matthew McFarlane (Leanne Bacich), their children, Jack, Rylan and Laila, all of Halifax, Kerry Blakeney, Malton, ON, Laura Fennell, East Bay, Cape Breton, Kaitlynn Fennell, Tofino BC, and Andrea Fennell, London ON.  Surviving as well are her sisters, Winnie Stevens (Jim), Dartmouth; and Hazel Hennel, Leesburg, VA, brother, Ken, Dartmouth and many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by sisters, Olive Bellefontaine and Jean Boudreau, brothers, Gerald and Reginald (in infancy), a daughter-in-law, Claudia Blakeney.
