Obituary of Ruth Virginia Zinck
Of Herring Cove/Portuguese Cove.On August 23, 2018, at age 85, our precious mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother, with family by her side, went home to be with our Heavenly Father. Born in Halifax, Ruth was a daughter of the late and much loved Weldon and Hazel (Verge) Swinehammer.
At the age of sixteen, Ruth worked at Simpsons until she married and unselfishly, dedicated herself to her family of ten children. Through her example, she taught them to appreciate the good times in their lives and to face the challenging ones with strength and courage. Ruth loved to sing. Back in the day, she and her sister Myrtle would perform at the Kent Theatre in Spryfield. She also performed with “The Ramblen Seven”; a local country band. As time passed, she expanded her artistic talent by writing poems and songs of which were later recorded by her children, receiving airplay on radio station, Seaside FM. Ruth made the world a better place by putting others ahead of herself. She spent many happy hours knitting dolls and bonnets for distressed children and newborns at the IWK, hats and mittens for the sea merchants and painting beautiful works of art on canvass. She was a member of the Northwood Players where she performed with her sister Frances; an avid bowler with the Spryfield Bowling League and with her wit and humor, never turned down a good game of Skip-Bo or Cribbage. She also loved her second family; her friends at the Margaret Latter Manor in Herring cove, where she resided for the past 13 years. Ruth cherished our Heavenly Father and was so thankful for the blessings He blessed her and her family with.
Ruth is survived by her children; Deborah (Tom), Wayne (Darlene), Judy (Barry) Fred (Susan), Steven (Lisa) Kevin (Rhonda) Donna (Stanley) Wendy (Ken) Doug (Sylvie) and Gord (Cathy); sisters, Frances Peach, Halifax; June pigeon, Quebec; twenty-six grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, (Wellington) “Sonny” Zinck; brothers, Russell Swinehammer and Earl Swinehammer; sisters, Beverly Poole, Myrtle Costello, Evelyn Rockwell, Lorraine Knight, and Vera Johnston; Granddaughter; Kristin Zinck, and son-in-law; Glenn Baker.
The Zinck family extends their greatest thanks to unit 8.3 nurses, Lyndsay, Laura, Fred, Beth, Marianne, and Carla, Queen Elizabeth II Infirmary, Halifax, for their compassionate care and to the palliative care team, Bonnie, Dave and Joe. Also, the family extends their utmost gratitude to the team at Seaside-FM for the beautiful and heartfelt tribute to our mother, aired on August 24, 2018, presented by Frank Cameron.
