I was deeply saddened to hear of Darrel's sudden passing. I knew Darrell for over 20 years. We worked together as far back as the Sarsfield days. I was lucky enough to call Darrell my friend. We did not see each other often but when we did the conversation always turned to drums as we both shared the instrument as a common passion. Darrell was the one who turned me on to the drum clinics sponsored by Long & McQuade and would always let me know when they were. I don't know who got more excited me or him. I would always get there early so I could sit with him. It won't be the same without him. I will miss him dearly. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Dear Sheila,
Please accept my prayers at this time for the loss of your Darrell.
I am not very good at expressing my feelings at times like this.
Instead I offer you my translation of a poem by my favorite Flemish poet, Toon Hermans, which best describes my own feelings:
When you have to miss someone
Not for a little while, but forever
Then it becomes impossibly hard,
Yes, it becomes heavy on your heart.
Not to be able to talk to one another
An emptiness that is left behind
Sadness and a bottomless missing feeling
When someone is no longer there
What remains are the memories
They become very precious things
To treasure and keep safe and apart
In a special little place in your heart.

Sheldon and Family,
We were shocked to read of your Dad's passing. We thought he was fine after his time in hospital when I was there Your Dad was far too young to leave this world and you all must be devastated. I hope as time passes Sheldon a smile will come when you think of him rather than a tear. Please know we are here for you if you ever need anything, even just an ear.

Darrell was a dear friend and bandmate. We had a special connection through music. We started playing together at church, at St Peter's in Ketch Harbour, before starting the Foggy Ocean Buoys with Peter Myatt. We practiced weekly in Darrell's garage and had a lot of fun. Darrell kept us on the beat. He was a fine drummer and very humble. Wayfaring Stranger is the first song we practised together and we would play it at every practice. It says "there is no sickness, toil or danger in that bright land to which I go".
I miss Darrell very much and I wish to extend my deepest condolences to Sheila and his family.

Darrell and my journey began in 1983 and continued and grew to the present.
He started out as my mentor, then became my strongest supporter and soon we became good friends and from there best friends.
Every other Tuesday over the last 15 or so years were spent having 11:45 am breakfast at Kempsters where we talked about our families especially our Kids and how fortunate we were to have them! Oh yeah we also solved all the world’s issues ! The staff at Kempsters always referred to us as the grumpy old men that had to sit in our own special booth! I would always call Darrell my brother and he always corrected me and called me his father :)
I loved Darrell and will miss him forever
Sheila as you already know, you were married to a remarkable man and Sheldon, Lauren and Ryan you have an amazing father!!
My Sincerest Condolences

There was a book written by Dale Carnegie ... "How To Win Friends and Influence People".Darrell must have been the co-author, as he was so admired by all those he met socially or in business. I met Darrell through playing in a band with Ryan in my early 20's. What stands out the most is how genuine and kind of a person he was, and how supportive he was of what we were doing. He always welcomed us into his home and took an interest in watching us play. I always made it a point to chat with him as I held a great deal of respect for him. I'm very sadened to hear of his passing.
