Obituary of Frederick William Newbery
Age 89 of Halifax, passed away November 21, 2019 at the Halifax Infirmary QEII. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late John and Gertrude (Little) Newbery.
Fred was a quiet and gentle man who had a quick wit and loved good puns and corny jokes. After graduating from Queen Elizabeth High School he attended Nova Scotia Land Surveyors School. He was a land surveyor with the City of Halifax for over 35 years until his retirement. He had a passion for nature and birds, gardening and music. He had played saxophone with the Princess Louise Fusiliers Reserve Band, Halifax Concert Band and the Bedford Leisure Club Orchestra. He also loved the annual family retreat to Liscombe Lodge.
Fred is survived by his children, Cynthia Newbery (Patrick d’Entremont), Peter (Juanita), both of Halifax and Paul (Karen) , North Carolina; grandchildren, Scott, Andrea, Nicholas and Alexander; sisters-in-law, Audrey Newbery, Kentville and Joan Young, Windsor; several nieces and nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years Caroline (Cochrane); brother, Robert, and sister Faye Spicer.
Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. A Celebration of Life will take place on Thursday, November 28 at 10 am from St. Paul’s United Church 173 Old Sambro Rd. Halifax. Reception to follow. Interment to take place in Ste. Croix Cemetery, Ste. Croix Hants Co. If you wish, donations in Fred’s name may be made to St. Paul’s United Church Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice.
