Obituary of Hedley Charles Richards

It is with great sadness, and heavy hearts, that the family of the late Hedley Charles Richards announce his passing after many years struggling with illness. He passed away peacefully in his home on February 18, 2020, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, at the age of 71 years.  Leaving with fond and loving memories, his wife of 48 years, Faye; Daughters, Michelle Ball (George), Coretta Richards-Scott (Jerry), and Vernetta Strum (James); granddaughters, Nikita, Kyla, and Morgan; brothers, Willis (Shirley), Hubert (Barbara), Lester (Viona), Harrison (Judy), David (Jackie); sisters, Nellie (Richard), Alma (Wayne), Florence (Freeman). Predeceased by parents, John and Elizabeth; sisters, Evelyn and Nina; brother, Glenn; and nephews, Brian and Tyrone. 

Hedley spent most of his life on the water fishing alongside his father and brothers. For many years he served as a member of the school board, was actively involved with St. Paul’s Anglican Church, St. Carols, and spent countless hours working with the FFAW Inshore Council. FFAW/ Unifor has recognized him for Outstanding Service, in appreciation of his commitment and dedication to building a progressive and dynamic Union throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.  He has also received recognition from the Prime Minister of Canada for 50 years of hard work and dedication to the Newfoundland and Labrador fishing industry. While he battled illness since the age of 18, he pushed on to achieve many things and lived his life to the fullest. 

As per Hedley’s request, visitation will be from 2-4 on Thursday, February 20th, at J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia, with cremation to follow. A Celebration of Life will be held during the summer, 2020, in his hometown of St. Carol’s, Newfoundland.
