I just decided that I had to reach out to Mike a few months ago, I tried his cell phone and even his landline but both numbers looked like they have been wiped out off the face of the earth. I got concerned because I knew that our last encounter on Jan 4th 2020 didn’t go well. I met Mike in May 2019, we got along very well but somehow we tried to work out a relationship but there was always that poor communications between us perhaps due to our differences in culture and beliefs. But I kept reconnecting with him just to remain friends because I liked him a lot and he was one of the kindest souls I met in Canada since we relocated here a few years ago.
Mike cared genuinely, he always offered to assist me now and then, he thought I was an honest God fearing Beautiful black woman. He said he once had a black girl friend at age 6 or 8 back when his parents lived in Zambia, he wanted to marry her and asked her parents and his parents too, but that didn’t work out, of course he was too young but he said he always thought he will meet Mary again in life someday. So when he saw me online he said, will you be my Mary? That was the sweetest love story I ever heard.
I am glad I reconnected with Mike at Christmas of 2019 again after about 4 months of us not talking. I gave him a beautiful big candle just to tell him that he impacted my life that year as a true friend. I wanted him to know that I am most grateful. He was very surprised and excitingly grateful
Last week I decided I’ll check the death registry via the department of transport since my young daughter 17 got a summer position there, she helped me check his names, then she sent me a text msg while at work to ask, “mom did he live in Bedford?” And I said yes, with an anxious heart, not knowing what was coming next.then she texted me back, “ oh mom I think he died in 2020…. she added a sad emoji and said I’m sorry mom”. I was kind of devastated feeling oh why? Was he sick? Was it the COVID? What happened to Mike? I will never find that out because I never got to meet his mom and younger sister whom he fondly talked about a gear deal.
I’m so sorry for your loss and I pray that the Lord Almighty grant his soul perfect rest and give you solace to bear the irreplaceable loss.
I’ll miss Mike so much.
God bless
Rita Ugbebor

I just heard of Mike’s passing and I’m still in shock. I met with him while in Halifax in January. It had been many years since we had connected last. He was always very much a gentlemen with a big heart and an incredible sense of humour. In our younger years, we could always rely on Mike for a comment out of left field that would have everyone in the room aching with laughter. I will very much miss him. He was a large part of my life. So sorry and sad to hear he’s gone. Incredible man with an incredible heart.
