My biggest memories of Rick are music, music, music and his straight from the soul hugs. Rick always reminded me of my Father who has been gone for 44 years now, so he had an extra special place in my heart. I remember many jams/practices with The Cove Banned when his dog Buddy would greet us at the door with a boot in his mouth. I would say “Just getting here and getting the boot already.” And of course the night we played back to back Am songs and his other dog Vera gave a huge sigh to which I said “I think we’re depressing the dog, we’d better change the key! Anyone who knew Rick loved him and he will be deeply missed. RIP my sweet friend. Enjoy the angel band. <3 XoX

I worked for a number of years in the 1990's with Dereck on a magazine that he essentially designed and assembled twice annually. It was always a treat to go to his office on Brunswick Street and then, when he moved his Mac home, on Herring Cove Road. He always had tea on and we chatted about politics, the church, music and any number of topics. Dereck was a treat to work with and I always looked forward to my visits with a briefcase full of articles and donor lists.
Years after I retired, I ran into Dereck at the NSLC store on Herring Cove where he had become the local expert on wine and food combinations.
Whatever Dereck did, he did exceptionally well and advice on wines was no exception.
I read about his tragic death only after I read his fulsome obituary. I am sad to know that he would have experienced the pain of a car crash before he died.
May God bless you Dereck Day - friend. You will be missed by family, friends and colleagues.

Gary and family, I was saddened to learn of Ricky’s death. We were neighbours, childhood friends, attended the same schools and ran into each other frequently over the years. He always had a kind word. Ricky was compassionate and had a deep love of animals seldom being seen around his home or ‘The Cove’ and Oceanview Drive (Oceanbreeze Ave) without one or more dogs following along. They frequently accompanied him on his many walks/hikes around the lakes at the top of the avenue and when they tired of the walk they would follow the path out to the entrance and wait patiently for him before returning home. I shall miss seeing him when I am out and about. I hope that your special memories of Ricky bring you comfort and many smiles when you think of him. God Bless.
