Obituary of Dorothy M. Kiley

Kiley, (Martin) Dorothy M., 92, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2022 at Maplestone Nursing Home in the company of her children.

Born and raised in Halifax Mom spent most of her adult life in Chebucto Head then in Ketch Harbour since the early 1950's. Mom was gentle, caring, generous, strong in so many ways, she never complained and never sat still. She loved hosting gatherings, preparing meals for all special occasions and having her annual open house Boxing Day party. Visiting family and having guests (often for weeks) was a joy, as was spending time and having overnight stays with her grandchildren. Mom loved nature: hiking/walking, picking blueberries, cranberries, wild flowers, visiting parks, costal areas and beaches.

After Dad passed in 1989 Mom started bowling with her friend Shirley, and did so for 30 years. She made many friends and enjoyed many trips away with her Bowling Buddies. Church was also important to Mom. She was a choir member, cleaning team member, a volunteer at annual church suppers, fairs and flea markets... lay something down in error and Mom sold it. Other joys in Mom's life were her beautiful garden, day trips, shopping, Frenchy’s, painting, reading and most of all, socializing. Mom loved people and being out and about for any reason.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Murray; parents James and Gertrude (Saunders) Martin; sister Norma Thompson; brothers Jim (twin), George and Bill Martin. She is survived by her daughters Anna, Karen (Gilles Frenette) and Susan (Sean Mullaly); sons Kevin (JoAnn) and Paul; brother Joe (Norma) Martin; grandchildren Kerri Henneberry, Simon and Benjamin Kiley, Sean Kiley Corscadden, Scott and Sara Kiley, Chelsea Frenette, Erin and J.J. Mullaly; great grandchildren Hayden, Declan, Cohen, Lauren and Paige; sisters-in-law Mary Martin, Norma Martin, Mary Kiley, Joyce Kiley; special friends Marilyn, Colleen and Dorothy; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the VON and Northwood caregivers who helped Mom during her last years at home, as well as her overnight caregivers who brought her so much comfort (Debbie, Amber, Chelsea, Molly, Sarah, Eleanor, Vicki). To the wonderful people of Maplestone in all Departments, we are so thankful Mom was in your care. The compassion, love, friendliness and so many kind gestures shown Mom made her feel special, cared for and comfortable in her last home. We can’t thank you enough.

The remains are entrusted to J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Rd., Halifax. Cremation will take place. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home Chapel on Monday, August 15 at 11:00 am. There will be no visitation or reception. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family requests masks be worn at the service.
