Katherine Love

Obituary of Katherine Allena Love

LOVE, Katherine "Kay" Allena- Age 89, of Halifax, died peacefully on March 20, 2023, at Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home. Survived by daughter Brenda Redpath and son Stephen Love; grandchildren Rachel, Sarah, Hannah and Zach Redpath, and Bryce, Michelle and Kevin Love; great-grandchildren Calvin Poges and Oaklynn Love; nephew and niece Fraser and Cassie Ross. Predeceased by parents Fraser and Florence Ross and brother Donald.

Kay was born and raised in Halifax and attended Queen Elizabeth High School and Mount Allison University, where she earned a B.Ed. She taught in the Halifax school system for nearly her entire career, including Halifax Ladies College, Edgewood, and Gorsebrook Junior High. She retired in 1991 to have knee replacement surgery, which "changed her life.” She was a popular teacher, who remembered and was remembered by virtually every student she ever taught, as well as their parents and siblings. Kay was gregarious and loved meeting people and making connections; anyone who talked to her long enough would invariably find someone they knew in common.

Kay lived independently for many years and was involved in organizations relating to her interests in photography, disability, sports, and animal welfare, among many others. She would travel to Louisiana twice a year to visit her daughter and grandchildren. Kay felt an affinity with PEI, where her mother’s people were from, and regularly spent summers there.

Eventually, physical frailty and dementia took over her life, but Kay was both feisty and fun-loving almost to the end. Many thanks to the staff of Saint Vincent’s for their care of Kay. Cremation and arragements have been entrusted to J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd, 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax.  In keeping with Kay's wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service.
