Obituary of Walter Joseph Dea

DEA, Walter “Walt” Joseph- Age 83 of Hatchet Lake, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Walter Dea, of Hatchett Lake NS, May 23, 2023.   Walter was born October 5th, 1939, in Bishop’s Falls NL.  He was the son of the late John and Ann (Brothers) Dea.

After finishing school Walter became a truck driver. Buying his first truck in 1969. He began his lifelong career as an owner/operator long haul truck driver. He logged more miles than most could ever imagine, while working under the umbrella of companies such as Allied, Halifax Transfer, United Van Lines, Midland, Clarkes, and Hoyts, just to name a few. All while making many, many friends out on the road.

His wife and children were very fortunate to have traveled across Canada on many adventures. While he loved the road, his greatest love was his family.  Nothing brought him greater joy or pride than his grandsons!  Fondly known to them as “Gamp”.  He cherished every minute spent with them in the garage, backyard rink, and going for drives.  He spent time with his honorary grandsons, Kaiden, Karsen, and Kohl, who he just adored and loved like his own!  As well as spending time with his other “BIG” joy, his Grandpuppers; Bentley, who would sit patiently while Gamp fed him toast with strawberry jam!

If you asked a hundred people to describe Walter, they would say he will be remembered for his kindness and generosity.  But also, his quick wit.  Walter was as meticulous with his vehicles as he was with his gardening.  If he wasn’t washing and shining a truck, he was going with the mower.  No one could mow a lawn or trim a hedge like “Walt” could!

His passing has left a huge void that can never be filled.  And he will be dearly missed by many!

Your shift is over Driver.  You can Rest now!

Walter is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary (MacDonald) Dea; sons, Patrick (Crystal), and Michael (Rhonda); daughter, Erica (Kyle Graves-Smith); grandsons, John Patrick, Austin, Rory, and Colby; sisters, Pauline (Owen Elliott), and Shirley (Burman Fudge).  Walter was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara Ann; brothers, Pat, Mike, and Kevin; sisters, Eileen, and Margaret; as well as his beloved little Buddy Jax.

Arrangements and cremation have been entrusted to J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. In keeping with Walter's wishes there will be no visitation.  A celebration of Life will take place at the Terence Bay Community Hall, 80 Sandy Cove Road on June 15th, from 2-5 p.m.  At a later date, the family will be taking Walter home to his beloved Newfoundland to scatter his ashes.
